Study visit: Danish inspirations for the development of wellbeing tourism

As part of the N-B-Well project, a study visit to Denmark was organised by the Polish Union of Active Mobility (PUMA). The visit took place in the Lolland-Falster region and focused on good practices in wellbeing tourism, public recreational infrastructure and the use of natural assets in local development.

The visit was attended by four mayors from Poland who are involved in the development of sustainable tourism. The aim of the visit was to explore examples that can inspire small towns and municipalities developing tourism offers based on nature, outdoor activity, regeneration and accessible public spaces.

During the visit, participants had the opportunity to see how Danish municipalities and local partners create attractive places for relaxation, walking and active leisure. Polish stakeholders showed particular interest in park solutions and infrastructure designed for families with children.

The place that attracted the greatest interest among participants were Liselund Romantic Garden, Faxe Ladeplads Beach, Faxe Limestone Quarry and Skovtårnet / Forest Tower at Camp Adventure. These sites presented different approaches to wellbeing tourism: from a historic landscape garden, through a public beach and waterfront recreation, to geotourism and modern forest infrastructure.

An important part of the visit was the discussion that wellbeing tourism does not have to rely solely on extensive spa infrastructure. It can also be developed through well-designed parks, walking routes, rest areas, viewpoints, safe play spaces, access to nature, and local products and services.

The Danish examples showed that public space can serve several functions at the same time: recreational, educational, social and tourism-related. For Polish municipalities, the most relevant solutions were those that can be implemented gradually, based on existing natural assets and local cooperation.

The visit confirmed that wellbeing tourism can be an important tool for improving residents’ quality of life and increasing the attractiveness of small towns and rural municipalities.
